Baron Joins Weather-Ready Nation, Seeks to Expand Unique Alerting Program Nationwide

Phoenix, AZ and Huntsville, AL, January 6, 2015 –  Baron Services, a global leader in the delivery of critical weather intelligence, is working as an ambassador of the Weather-Ready Nation, an initiative of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Through this and other efforts, Baron is helping the organization fulfill its mission of “building community resilience in the face of increasing vulnerability to extreme weather and water events.”

Specifically, Baron announces the availability of the Baron SAF-T-Net weather alerting system without charge to every local Emergency Management Agency (EMA) in the United States. The system includes the free Baron SAF-T-Net Smartphone app for county residents, containing complete local weather and patented, unique weather alerts that are highly specific. As part of the system, Emergency Management receives the Baron App Messenger that allows direct communication with all app subscribers or a subset of app subscribers in their county.

This is an extension of the highly acclaimed statewide system employed in the entire state of Alabama, which has delivered over 3.5 million warnings and advisories in the past 3 years. The system was originally developed as a pilot program in response to a series of F5 tornadoes that ravaged much of Alabama on April 27, 2011.

The pilot program provides subscribers with location-specific, weather-related alerts for a variety of weather conditions, including twisting wind alerts and dangerous storm alerts. That program, which also includes a unique ability to send messages directly to Baron app users, enjoyed rapid adoption and statewide engagement among Alabama’s 68 county Emergency Management Agencies (EMA). As a result, Baron expanded the program, giving EMA officials the ability to message subsets of users based on location and weather event, and the ability to ask for and receive event-specific information.

Now, as a member of Weather-Ready Nation, Baron is poised to expand the program to other states as well. On Wednesday, January 7th, Robert O. Baron will speak to students about this initiative during a Weather-Ready Nation sponsored luncheon during the AMS conference. Interested attendees may join the event, which will take place in the Phoenix Convention Center – West and North Buildings, 221A-C, from noon to 1:30 p.m.

“This is about saving lives,” said Baron. “Precise, personalized alerts can make all the difference in helping the general public gain enhanced situational awareness and avoid putting themselves at greater risk in a developing weather situation.”
