January 27 Afternoon Update on 2015 Nor’easter

Analysis by Kevin Nugent, Forecast Meteorologist, Baron
The powerful Nor’easter continues to move north off the Massachusetts coast. Bands of snow on the west side of the low pressure center, shown above, continue to affect coastal New England and Maine. This band of snow will slowly move offshore and dissipate through the overnight hours.
High-resolution Visible Satellite imagery from this afternoon shows an eye-like feature at the center of the circulation. Not surprising–this storm did produce hurricane-force wind gusts on Nantucket Island earlier today.
Above is a look back at the Monday Jan 26th 18z Baron 15km model run (left), predicting storm accumulations with highest snow amounts from eastern Long Island through eastern Massachusetts to coastal Maine. Comparing the Baron model to NWS total storm accumulation through 3pm this afternoon reveals that the model’s run-to-run forecast consistency was very accurate with snow accumulation across the region.
